History
The City of Papillion is proud to own and operate Sumtur Amphitheater at Walnut Creek.
Since 1990, Ken Molzer and members of the Walnut Creek Amphitheater Steering Committee began discussions about the potential for a band shell being built by the Halleck Park duck pond in Papillion, Nebraska. Since that time, the discussion and vision for an outdoor venue blossomed into the beautiful Sumtur Amphitheater at Walnut Creek we all enjoy today.
Two long-time Papillion residents and supporters of the City of Papillion donated more than $200,000 each toward the birth of this project – Mr. and Mrs. Wally Sump and Mr. and Mrs. Wes Turtscher. Based on their generous support, naming rights were given hence; the Sumtur Amphitheater at Walnut Creek was born.
The City of Papillion – who was also a major financial contributor to the venue, has been fortunate to partner with a large number of area developers, businesses and other community members who have contributed to the development of this beautiful facility. Thanks to these partners, Papillion is now home to the only amphitheater of its kind this side of the Missouri River.
Site Improvement Plan
From the day the doors opened at Sumtur Amphitheater, this beautiful jewel quickly became a popular destination location in the City of Papillion. This multi-use venue has been used to show free movies to the community, has hosted free summer concert series for patrons, has been host to several ticketed music and theater events, high school music concerts, theater camps, church services and concerts, local music talent, weddings and so much more!
Due to its growing popularity, the City received a $300,000 grant from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development in 2008 which was equally matched by the City of Papillion for more infrastructure improvements to the site. With this grant, the following improvements were completed in May 2010 to enhance the overall experience for the patrons who visit Sumtur Amphitheater:
- Beautiful rod-iron fencing around the perimeter of the facility
- A new concession stand and ticket booth
- 20 additional restroom stalls
- Wireless security and communications
- ADA sidewalk and walking path
- Expanded parking area with lights
- Rain garden
- Landscaping
These improvements make the theater more accessible to everyone who comes to enjoy an outdoor performance. It's an even more perfect place to enjoy a performance under the stars in the heart of Papillion, NE. The City of Papillion is committed to providing quality and diverse programming worthy of the patrons of Papillion and the surrounding region.
